                                   Artist’s Statement

I've  been painting for about 20 years. I’m mostly self taught, but I have taken selected classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Marylhurst College, and have attended numerous painting workshops conducted by leading local and nationally known artists.  I also belong to a professional critique group which is a constant source of feedback and inspiration.

I've won several awards in shows and competitions, the most recent ones being Best of Show in the Columbian Artists Association Spring 2007 Show in Longview, WA and Third Place in the 2007 Artist Colony International Online Exhibition for “Rapture,” one of the paintings you can view by clicking on “Gallery.”.  I've also earned signature membership status in the Northwest Watercolor Society and active (juried) memberships in two other northwest societies.  At present I am represented by three art galleries in Oregon and Washington.
Currently I am working with acrylic paint on canvas and on gessoed illustration board and matboard.  I frequently prime my painting surface with acrylic media such as molding paste and gel medium to provide texture and surface interest.   When people learn that I am an artist, they sometimes ask "what" I paint.  In fact,  the process of painting is more interesting to me than any particular content categories, so I have found myself venturing into abstract as well as representational painting, and allowing my imagination and sense of humor to influence my work.
My “day job” is as a clinical psychologist in Vancouver, WA where I share a private practice with my wife, Judy.
